Birds & Company presents suggestions of programs with accommodation on our partners, for those would like to know the nature of Madeira and the magnificent landscapes of the island, by car or by walk, given the opportunity to contribute for sustainable tourism of Madeira.

  • Program 1 - Birdwatching in Madeira Island

    The program of Birdwatching in Madeira, during 4 days with 5 night’s accommodation, is for those who want to know and see the Birds of Madeira, but also explore the island and their landscapes.
    The unique and restrict species of this region (Madeira's / Zino’s Petrel, Desertas Petrel, Trocaz Pigeon, and Madeiran Firecrest), the different types of habitats, the short distances and the mild climate are factors that provide unique experiences of birdwatching in Madeira, either in sea or in land.

    ITINERARY

    Day 1 - ZINOS PETREL EXPEDITION – Nocturnal visit to the breeding area of Zino’s Petrel
    We will start our expedition with a visit to the Madeira’s Petrel Centre to know more about the Conservation of this endangered seabird. The highlight is the night visit to the Madeira’s/Zino’s Petrel breeding grounds to hear their calls and delight us with fabulous mountain scenery.

    Day 2 - DESERTAS ISLAND TRIP – full day
    This one day trip to the Desertas Islands, allow you the chance to spot some of the breeding seabirds of the archipelago such as Cory's Shearwater, Bulwer's Petrel and the Deserta's Petrel. Once on Desertas Island the lunch will be served on board and if you wish you can swim or snorkelling before the visit to the island where you will have a guided tour. During the trip to Desertas Islands you will have the opportunity to observe some cetaceans such as Bottlenose Dolphin, Commom Dolphin and Pilot whale´s.

    Day 3 - BIRDWATCHING HALF DAY – Center and East of the island
    The morning will be dedicated to land birds visiting different habitats with special efforts to the endemics Trocaz Pigeon and Madeira Firecrest, in Laurel forest – UNESCO Natural World Heritage. We will also try to spot the Berthelot´s Pipit and the Rock Sparrow in a very different habitat – São Lourenço Peninsula and also visit some potential places for migratory species.

    PELAGIC TRIP
    A boat trip of 2,5 hours on south coast line of the island after lunch, where we will try to see most of the seabirds that breed in Madeira island, such us Cory’s Shearwater, Manx Shearwater, Bulwer’s Petrel, Zino’s and Deserta’s Petrel, endemics of archipelago. However could be possible see passing seabirds as Great Skua and Sooty Shearwater.

    Day 4 - BIRDWATCHING DAY – West and North of the island
    This last day will be dedicated to see other species such as the Spectacled Warbler, the Plain Swift and the Roseate Tern during their breeding season. We will visit different places in the Western and Northern of the island, such as the highest plateau of the island, lagoons and river mouth, to increase the number of spotted species and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Madeira.


  • Program 2 - Discovery Madeira Natural History

     A 5 days program with 6 night’s accommodation, for all that want to know about Natural History of the archipelago and explore the amazing nature and geology of Madeira.
    A great program to know some of the marine and land protected areas in the archipelago (such as the Mountain Massif, the Peninsula of São Lourenço, the Laurissilva Forest, the Desertas Islands), all classified as Special Protection Areas under Birds Directive, and Special Conservation Areas within the Natura Network 2000.

    ITINERARY

    Day 1 - DESERTAS ISLAND TRIP – full day

    Day 2 - BIRDWATCHING DAY TOUR – full day
    A full day birding experience that will allow us to view some of the endemic species such as the Trocaz Pigeon and the Madeira Firecrest. The tour is around the west and north side of the island with visits to different habitats, such as the highest plateau of the island, lagoons and river mouth, providing you to see different species in the most beautiful places of the island.

    Day 3 - EXPLORING THE GEOLOGY OF MADEIRA – half day
    Madeira is an oceanic island with over six million years which evolution and present landscape had been and is still being stamped by two enormous forces: volcanism and erosion. This half day tour will be dedicated to discover Madeira’s geological heritage, such us volcanic rocks, lava flows, volcanic dykes but also the result of erosion forces, such as steep valleys, deposits of sea cliffs, pebble beaches.

    Day 4 - EXPLORING THE LAUREL FOREST – full day
    A Levada walk to explore the ancient forest which offers us an astonishing view of beautiful landscapes, waterfalls and breathtaking valleys. The biological diversity in the community of Laurel Forest - UNESCO World Natural Heritage is very high, where you will find a great number of species exclusive to Madeira and Macaronesia.

    Day 5 - SÃO LOURENÇO PENÍNSULA – full day
    A walk to explore a beautiful peninsula included in Madeira’s Natural Park and the Natura 2000 network due to its biodiversity, including more than 157 plant species, of which 8% are endemic to the Macaronesia region and 14% endemic to Madeira’s Archipelago. If you wish, you can have the possibility to swim and dive in this crystal water of the Atlantic Ocean.


  • Program 3 - Discover Madeira by Walk

     The program Discover Madeira by Walk, during 4 days with 5 nights’ accommodation, is dedicated for all that want to explore the island and their landscapes by walk in a gradual way.
    Walking in Madeira, have been one of the most popular activities on the island. Hundreds of kilometers of Levada walks (mini-channels built to carry water mainly from the north to drier areas on south of the island), foothpaths and old municipal paths run throughout the island.

    ITINERARY

    Day 1 - PENINSULA OF SÃO LOURENÇO – half day walk
    A 6 kilometres walk, come and go, will take you through a spectacular peninsula – Ponta São Lourenço with unique biodiversity. The abrupt coastline makes this walk very popular, a rocky and contrasting alternative to the evergreen levada paths.

    Day 2 - RIBEIRO FRIO / CHÃO DAS FEITEIRAS – half day walk
    A 7,4 km walk at a very famous place for the walkers known as Ribeiro Frio (860 metres), an area in the depths of the luxuriant Laurel forest – UNESCO Natural World Heritage and Natura 2000 network. Along this circular walk, in Levada and path, you will have fantastic views of the highest peaks of Madeira Island.

    Day 3 – MOUNTAINS OF MADEIRA – full day walk
    One of the most beautiful walk in the highest peaks of the island (Pico do Areeiro 1818 m – Pico Ruivo 1862 m) where we can admire breathtaking scenery and explore the biodiversity characteristic of the mountain habitat.

    Day 4 – LOMBO DO MOURO / ENCUMEADA – full day walk
    A very beautiful and long walk through different levadas, paths and tunnels to explore the Laurel Forest - UNESCO World Natural Heritage. A walk of about 16 km, showing stunning landscapes, valleys and a variety of flora and fauna.

Conditions:
- The price is valid for a minimum of 2 pax and maximum of 16 pax in Program 1 and 2.
- The price is valid for a minimum of 4 pax and maximum of 16 pax in Program 3.

- Reservations are subject to availability of the type of rooms.
- Program 1 available from 21st April to 30th September of 2014 and 2015.
- Programs 2 and 3 available all year, except 26th December to 3rd January and 13th April to 20th April.

- In the price is not included: cost of flights, other meals and personal expenses.
- Optical and photographic equipment insurance is NOT Birds & Company’s responsibility.
- If not possible to do any tour due to weather conditions, the program will be adjusted at the moment, so that all tours can be realized.
- The company is authorized by the Madeira Natural Park to operate in all protected areas.
