Madeira Buzzard Census 2014


1969210 494728433983426 102621652 nThe Common Buzzard Census is a long-term project managed annually by Spea – Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (Portuguese partner of Birdlife International) and runs only in the archipelago of Madeira e Azores. In the Azores the species is known as “MilhafreButeo buteo rothschildi, in Madeira is known as MantaButeo buteo harterti.

The goal of the project is to know more about the evolution of population and the ecology of the species, but also involve everyone interested in contributing with scientific data about this species being a Scientist Citizen.

Last weekend on the 5th and 6th of March, Birds & Company participated in the Common Buzzard Census 2014. Covering about 125 km by car in 4 different routes, were sighted 10 Madeira Buzzards mostly hovering and in forest areas.

We would like to thanks all of 9 scientists citizens who enthusiastically joined us in this initiative. Keep doing!
