This tour starts early morning and generally takes place in the West and North side of the island where you can easily visit different habitats and watch some of the most beautiful landscapes of Madeira island.
Your chance to observe resident endemic species and subspecies of Madeira and Macaronesia!
The first stop will be at about 1400 meters high in the biggest plateau of the island – Paul da Serra.
In the Autumn and Winter the plateau can be a very cloudy area, however you shall have a chance to observe species such us Berthelot’s Pipit (Anthus berthelotii madeirensis) which is endemic to Macaronesia, possibly you will be able to also see the Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata orbitalis) and birds of prey including the biggest bird in Madeira, the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo harterti).
The next stop will be at Fanal, a fantastic and beautifull place where you can observe the impressive Fetid Laurel´s and the subspecies madeirensis of Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) with a very distinctive call and plumage.
Before heading a spectacular valley covered by Laurel Forest we will have a stop in a river mouth at north coast to observe the Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea schmitzi), endemic subspecie from arquipelago. Vagrant species can occur in this area, as in the last years a Green-winged Teal (Anas carolinensis) has been recorded.
Once at the Laurel Forest valley, we shall search the species that only exists in Madeira Island - the Trocaz Pigeon (Columba trocaz) and the Madeira Firecrest(Regulus madeirensis) with its nervous call.
Before our last stop (São Vicente) we will have a break for lunch in a restaurant and then we'll continue our tour searching by the coastline for the Roseate Tern (Stern dougallii), a bird species that is breeding recently on Madeira Island.
In the way to Funchal we shall have the last stop on a pond near the sea where is usual to observe vagrants, shorebirds, ducks, coots such us the American Coot (Fulica americana) that has been recorded in the beginning of 2012.
This tour can be organized and personalized according to the focus of a specific interest of the groups such as: specific species, distinc behaviours or ecology.
