This tour is one of the most beautiful walks in Madeira Island, with approximately 7,6 km between the highest peaks (Pico do Areeiro 1818 meters – Pico Ruivo 1862 meters). A nice walk between the stunning eroded volcanic mountains of Madeira, only for those that have some walk experience. In this mountain environment the clouds can appear easily bringing the mist.
This area is included in Natural Park due to its exclusive biodiversity that has a significant scientific value.
The walk start along a cobbled path near the marker point of Areeiro, where you can have a view of the highest peaks. About 20 minutes later we reach the point of view known as Ninho da Manta from where there’s a magnificent view over a laurel forest valley – Fajã da Nogueira.
The jewel of the island's fauna is without a doubt Zino's / Madeira’s Petrel (Pterodorma madeira), an endemic species of Madeira Island that breed in these mountains.
The walk continues by the ridge of the mountain with several steep ascents and descents on stairs protected with cable wires, until reaching a tunnel that crosses the Pico do Gato (1780 meters). After this short tunnel with about 50 meters, the path divides and the walk follows to the left through the western route at the west flank of the Pico das Torres. The eastern route it’s a demanding and steep ascent to Pico das Torres (1847 meters) not chosen for us.
In the western route the path mostly flat runs along some tunnels (maximum around 200 meters length) altering with path mostly cut into the rock face. During this part of the walk the splendid downward view will open up over the terraced field in the Nun's Valley contrasting with the impressive volcanic dikes into the mountains around.
Among the unique fauna and flora that lives at these high altitudes we can find different species, such us the butterfly Madeiran Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas phlaeides), the herb Madeiran thrift (Armeria maderensis) and the Plain Swift (Apus unicolor) which are endemic species of Macaronesia.
After reaching the end of last tunnel the eastern route joins us at 1590 meters of altitude, and from here the goal is climb up to Pico Ruivo. After about 40 minute ascent we will find the Ruivo mountain house where the last stage up to the island’s highest peak begins. After 10 minutes we are at the summit column of Pico Ruivo. Here, if the clouds allow, you will record forever in memory the impressive 360 degree panorama over all island, since Peninsula of São Lourenço until the plateau of Paul da Serra.
A fantastic walk where you will have the chance to take the most wonderful pictures from beautiful spots.
The weather in this area can change very quickly and sometimes we have to cancel the tour because of strong winds and dense fogs, however we will run the tour only with the maximum safety conditions.
