The Zino's or Madeira's Petrel (Pterodroma madeira) is one of the rarest birds in the world and the most threatened seabird in Europe - this species nests in Madeira's Central massif and was considered to be extinct until the end of the sixties, when it was rediscovered.
This is a night tour to the Petrel's breeding grounds that allows you to hear the calls that they use to communicate. After 40 minutes driving from Funchal we reach Pico do Areeiro (1818m), the third highest peak in Madeira Island and part of the central mountainous massif.
You will visit the Madeira’s Petrel Center - Dr. Rui Silva, where it is possible to know more about the conservation history through an exhibit that describes the work done in the last 25 years.
From Pico do Areeiro we will have a short walk of about 25 minutes. In some parts the path is very steep but with safety.
After arriving to the spot we will turn off all the lights and wait to hear the calls of this rare Pterodroma, which seems to be a ghostly wail that in the past was thought to be the cries of the shepherds that have fallen on these mountains. If the sky is clear and without any clouds you will be able to witness the birds flights torning a stunning starry sky. After this impressive show we will return back to the starting point. This tour respects all safety conditions and since the weather in this area can change very quickly, sometimes it has to be reschedulled due to strong winds and dense fogs.
This tour is only available between April 1 and August 31.
