Birding Pelagic Trip 

  • Identification

A small seabird with a dark “mask” on its face colored white and grey. The legs are long and yellow that able the specie to have a characteristic flight which seems to “Jump” from the sea surface. Due to the small size and the pelagic behavior it is very difficult species to observe.

  • Voice

A sound similar to a kooo, koo, that can be heard from the nest.

  • Ecology

This seabird breeds on remote islands and nests in burrows on flat sand areas with low herbaceous vegetation. In Selvagens islands the birds arrive in December and leave the breeding ground in August. It feeds on planktonic crustaceans, small fish and also feed on squid.

  • Distribution

The species is present in the archipelagos of Canaries, Cape Verde and Madeira. In the Madeira and Canaries occurs the subspecies hipoleuca. In the archipelago of Madeira is only present on the Selvagens islands with a large population estimated in 36.000 breeding pairs on Selvagem Grande.


The colony of Selvagem Grande represents the northern limit of its worldwide distribution.
